Where else is there a place for me, O jewel of Raghu’s line? Purifier of the fallen, keeper of the surrendered, refuge of the shelterless—whose championed vow is as bold as yours? (1) If Rama, understanding the faults in my heart and becoming greatly angry, will not lend an ear to my petition and turns his face away, even then I shall speak fearlessly: O ocean of compassion, after hearing my words, how can you remain without looking upon me? (2) My foremost longing is to dwell in your city, Rama, but hosts of lust and the other passions surround that longing. Liberation is inaccessible, and heaven is solely the fruit of merit; through the power of the Name, how could I dwell near the city of Yama? (3) There is no place anywhere; where shall I go, Lord of Kosala? I am poor and without wealth, distressed and without a dwelling. Be gracious now and grant servant Tulsi a home in that village where the elephant, the vulture, the hunter, and the others dwell. (4)
