Rāga Sāranga My one trust is Rama’s name. My contrary mind has such a nature that it places faith nowhere else. (1) Study of the six systems and the Rig, Yajur, Atharva, and Sama Vedas was not written into my destiny. Hearing of vows, pilgrimages, and austerity fills me with dread—who would torment himself to death in them or waste the body away? (2) The net of ritual action is difficult in the Kali age, and its proper performance depends upon money. As for knowledge, dispassion, yoga, repetition, and austerity: there is danger from greed, delusion, anger, and lust. (3) In this becoming, those who sing the hosts of Raghunayaka’s virtues are always fit for everything. Seated beneath the wish-tree of the Name, why fear either dense storm cloud or fierce sun? (4) Who knows who will go to Yama’s city, who to the gods’ city, and who to the supreme abode? Tulsidas finds it very good to live in this world as Rama’s servant. (5)
