हे हरि! कवन जतन भ्रम भागै। देखत, सुनत, बिचारत यह मन, निज सुभाउ नहिं त्यागै॥ १॥ भगति-ग्यान-बैराग्य सकल साधन यहि लागि उपाई। कोउ भल कहउ, देउ कछु, असि बासना न उरते जाई॥ २॥ जेहि निसि सकल जीव सूतहिं तव कृपापात्र जन जागै। निज करनी बिपरीत देखि मोहिं समुझि महा भय लागै॥ ३॥ जद्यपि भग्न-मनोरथ बिधिबस, सुख इच्छत, दुख पावै। चित्रकार करहीन जथा स्वारथ बिनु चित्र बनावै॥ ४॥ हृषीकेश सुनि नाउँ जाउँ बलि, अति भरोस जिय मोरे। तुलसिदास इंद्रिय-संभव दुख, हरे बनिहिं प्रभु तोरे॥ ५॥
Hari, by what effort will delusion flee? Though this mind sees, hears, and reflects, it does not abandon its own nature. (1) Devotion, knowledge, dispassion, and every discipline are undertaken for this mind; yet the desire that someone praise me or give me something does not leave my heart. (2) In the night when all beings sleep, those who receive your grace remain awake. Seeing my conduct opposed to theirs and understanding it, I am seized by immense fear. (3) Though fate breaks its aims, it still desires joy and obtains pain—like a painter without hands who attempts to make a picture for his own gain. (4) Hearing your name ‘Lord of the senses,’ I give myself to you; immense trust fills my heart. Tulsidas says: Lord, it will be fitting for you to remove the pain born of my senses. (5)
