Hari, what fault can I lay on you? Night and day I practice precisely those means by which a good end is difficult even in a dream. (1) I know sense-gain to be the form of ruin and that attachment to it makes one fall into the dark well; even so, like dog, goat, and donkey, I do not leave it and wander enamored of sense-objects. (2) Subject to delusion, I have wronged living beings and never considered my own good. Pride, envy, and self-importance are enemies of knowledge, yet I dwell endlessly among them. (3) From Veda and Purana I hear and understand that Raghunatha pervades the whole world, yet this does not penetrate my pithless, sinful mind—just as sandalwood does not penetrate bamboo. (4) Treasury of Compassion, I am an ocean of offenses; you who know the heart know it. Bitten by the serpent of becoming, Tulsidas takes refuge in you, rider of the serpent’s enemy. (5)
