Madhava, such is this maya of yours: one may exhaust oneself and die trying remedies, yet cannot cross it until you show compassion. (1) One may hear, reflect, understand, and explain it, yet the state itself does not enter the heart; without experiencing it, the terrible adversity of becoming, born of delusion, torments one. (2) If the mind once tasted the sweet, cooling nectar of Brahman, why would it run night and day after sense-objects shaped like mirage water? (3) Why would one whose home contains a stainless wish-granting jewel gather glass? One may fall subject to another in a dream; awake and seeing clearly, whom would one go to implore? (4) Knowledge, devotion, and the many disciplines are all true—nothing in them is false. Yet Tulsidas holds this confidence in his heart: delusion ends through Hari’s grace. (5)
