The Feet Are the Only Refuge

इहै कह्यो सुत! बेद चहूँ। श्रीरघुबीर-चरन-चिंतन तजि नाहिन ठौर कहूँ॥ १॥ जाके चरन बिरंचि सेइ सिधि पाई संकरहूँ। सुक-सनकादि मुकुत बिचरत तेउ भजन करत अजहूँ॥ २॥ जद्यपि परम चपल श्री संतत, थिर न रहति कतहु। हरि-पद-पंकज पाइ अचल भइ, करम-बचन-मनहूँ॥ ३॥ करुनासिंधु, भगत-चिंतामनि, सोभा सेवतहूँ। और सकल सुर, असुर-ईस सब खाये उरग छहूँ॥ ४॥ सुरुचि कह्यो सोइ सत्य तात अति परुष बचन जबहूँ। तुलसिदास रघुनाथ-बिमुख नहिं मिटइ विपति कबहूँ॥ ५॥

Son, this is what all four Vedas have said: apart from contemplation of glorious Raghubira’s feet, there is no refuge anywhere. (1) Brahma served those feet, and Shankara too attained perfection. Shuka, Sanaka, and the other liberated ones roam free, yet they still worship them even now. (2) Although Fortune is supremely fickle, forever staying nowhere, on finding Hari’s lotus feet she became steadfast in deed, speech, and mind. (3) He is the ocean of compassion, the wish-granting jewel of devotees, the glory of those who serve; all other gods, demons, and lords have been devoured by the six serpents. (4) What Suruchi said then in exceedingly harsh words was true, dear one: Tulsidas says the adversity of one turned away from Raghunatha never ends. (5)
