Rāga Jaitaśrī Nothing came of it; my life went away. Having obtained this exceedingly rare body, I did not abandon deceit and worship Rama with mind, speech, and body. (1) Childhood passed with the mind unaware, while restlessness grew fourfold. In the fever of youth I took a young woman as a harmful regimen, and the three humors filled with the wind of desire. (2) I squandered middle age for wealth, trying the many devices of farming and trade. Turned away from Rama, I found no happiness even in a dream and passed night and day in the three torments. (3) I did not serve the servants of Sita’s Lord—saints of sound understanding, noble devotion, and loving faith. Hearing the deeds of the Lord of Raghu’s line, my body did not thrill; recounting them, my mind did not rejoice. (4) Now I grieve like a serpent without its jewel: my limbs are helpless, crushed as old age rushes in. Beating my head, wringing my hands, I repent; no friend or well-wisher can bear this affliction for me. (5) Those for whose sake I ruined my own next world now stand ashamed in their places. Tulsidas, even now remember Raghunatha—an elephant was delivered by his single Name. (6)
