दीनबंधु, सुखसिंधु, कृपाकर, कारुनीक रघुराई। सुनहु नाथ! मन जरत त्रिबिध जुर, करत फिरत बौराई॥ १॥ कबहुँ जोगरत, भोग-निरत सठ हठ बियोग-बस होई। कबहुँ मोहबस द्रोह करत बहु, कबहुँ दया अति सोई॥ २॥ कबहुँ दीन, मतिहीन, रंकतर, कबहुँ भूप अभिमानी। कबहुँ मूढ़, पंडित बिडंबरत, कबहुँ धर्मरत ग्यानी॥ ३॥ कबहुँ देव! जग धनमय रिपुमय कबहुँ नारिमय भासै। संसृति-संनिपात दारुन दुख बिनु हरि-कृपा न नासै॥ ४॥ संजम, जप, तप, नेम, धरम, ब्रत बहु भेषज-समुदाई। तुलसिदास भव-रोग रामपद-प्रेम-हीन नहिं जाई॥ ५॥

Friend of the lowly, ocean of joy, maker of grace, compassionate Lord of Raghu—listen, Master! The mind burns with a threefold fever and wanders about behaving madly. (1) At times it is absorbed in yoga, at times engrossed in enjoyment; at times the fool is stubbornly ruled by withdrawal. At times, under delusion, it commits much hostility, and at times it is compassion itself. (2) At times it is lowly and witless, poorer than a pauper; at times it is a proud king. At times it is a fool making a show of scholarship, and at times a wise man devoted to dharma. (3) At times, Lord, the world appears made of wealth, at times of enemies, at times of women. The terrible suffering of this delirium of worldly existence is not destroyed without Hari’s grace. (4) Self-restraint, recitation, austerity, disciplines, dharma, vows—a whole multitude of medicines: Tulsidas says the disease of becoming does not go away without love for Rama’s feet. (5)
