English Translation

The disease of worldly existence is destroyed, along with the effects of past, present, and future karma. Such is the Name of Vithoba: by merely uttering it, the cycle of birth is broken. Sin cannot remain; the threefold suffering flees. Says Tuka, even maya becomes a servant and falls at His feet.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

The disease of worldly life is cut. So are the fruits of past, present, and future deeds. Such is the name of Vithoba: when you speak it, the round of birth is broken. Sin cannot stay. The threefold suffering runs away. Tuka says: maya herself becomes a servant and falls at His feet.

What it means

Tukaram is naming the full reach of the divine Name, and he does not soften it. To utter Vithoba's name cuts the sickness of worldly existence and burns up karma in all three directions, the stored, the ripening, and the deeds still to come, so that the cycle of rebirth itself is broken. Where the Name is spoken, sin finds no place to live and the threefold suffering flees. The boldest claim comes last: maya, the very power that binds everyone, is reduced to a servant girl and falls at God's feet. The point is not magic words but where the whole self turns when the Name is truly taken.

नाम महिमा
