English Translation

Let the house be inhabited by God, continually and without break. Let his company attend us in sitting, sleeping, eating, and walking. Let all thoughts and doubts dissolve, along with the notions of merit and sin. Says Tuka, when Govinda pervades every moment, there is abundance in all seasons.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Let the house be lived in by God, always and without break. Let his company stay with me in sitting, in sleeping, in eating, in walking. Let plans and doubts melt away, and merit and sin with them. Tuka says: when Govinda fills all of time, every season is abundance.

What it means

Tukaram prays not for a special hour of worship but for a life entirely lived in. He wants God to dwell in the house without interruption, his company present in sitting, sleeping, eating, and walking, the ordinary motions of a day. When that company is constant, the restless machinery of plans and doubts dissolves, and even the bookkeeping of merit and sin falls away with it. The closing line is the harvest of this: when Govinda saturates every moment, there is no lean season at all. The whole of time becomes plenty, because God is in all of it.
