English Translation

Om Tat Sat: this is the essence of the sacred formula. Panduranga is the ocean of grace. Hari Om, with the rising and falling tones of the Vedic chant, Panduranga is one with the Supreme Lord. Says Tuka, the root of the Vedas stands apart, devoted to the welfare of cows and brahmins.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Om Tat Sat: this is the heart of the sacred word. Panduranga is the ocean of grace. Hari Om, with the rising and falling tones of the chant, Panduranga is one with the Supreme Lord. Tuka says: he stands apart, the root of the Vedas, set on the good of cows and brahmins.

What it means

Tukaram takes the highest Vedic formula, Om Tat Sat, and says its whole meaning is one person: Panduranga, the form of Vitthal at Pandhari. He is the ocean of grace, and he is one with the Supreme that the chant rises and falls toward. The closing line gives him a double place: he is the very root the Vedas grow from, and yet he stands apart, turned outward toward the welfare of cows and brahmins. The point is that the abstract sacred sound and the living, caring Lord are not two things.
