Tukaram Gatha (Marathi Wikisource)

English Translation

Sitting with a thief makes the mind think like a thief; the moment you see a rag, the mind races toward it. Sitting even for a moment with an adulterer, the mind runs at the sight of a woman. Abandon the clinging web of worldly preoccupation and hold Keshava in your heart. Cast off the shackles of worldly life and cultivate a taste for kirtan. Says Tuka, I tell you this one thing: sing of Rukmini's Lord with your lips.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Sit beside a thief and your mind turns like a thief's; the moment it sees a rag, the mind runs toward it. Sit even a moment beside an adulterer, and at the sight of a woman the mind runs. Throw off the tangle of worldly habit and hold Keshava in your heart. Cast off the shackles of worldly life, and grow a taste for kirtan. Tuka says: I tell you this one thing, sing of Rukmini's Lord with your lips.

What it means

Tukaram shows how company shapes the mind by watching it borrow the habits of whoever sits near. Beside a thief the mind starts grabbing, even at a rag; beside an adulterer it chases at the first sight of a woman. The remedy is to change what you keep close: drop the tangled habits of worldly life, hold Keshava in the heart, and let a taste for kirtan grow where the old craving was. The single instruction he leaves you with is plain and doable, to keep the name of Rukmini's Lord on your lips, so the mind has something holy to keep company with.
