Tukaram Gatha (Marathi Wikisource)

English Translation

Blessed are the servants of the saints: they receive ready-made nourishment of bliss. Much labor goes into shaping something, and a small mistake in the process can cause ruin. A cooked meal requires all the right ingredients gathered beforehand; when everything comes together, it tastes sweet. Says Tuka, telling stories of war sounds fine, so long as the battlefield has not come into view.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Blessed are those who let themselves be called servants of the saints: theirs is ready-made bliss, asked for and given. To shape a thing yourself takes much labor, and one small slip in the method brings ruin. A cooked meal needs all the right things gathered first; when everything comes together, then it is sweet. Tuka says: telling stories of battle sounds fine, until the battlefield itself comes into view.

What it means

Tukaram is comparing two ways of seeking God: leaning on the saints, or relying on one's own effort. To serve the saints and take the grace they offer is the easy way, ready-made bliss that costs only humility. Doing it yourself is like cooking or craft: it demands every ingredient in place and the right method, and a single mistake spoils the whole. The last line lands the warning with a soldier's bluntness. Boasting of one's own spiritual prowess is like swapping war stories; it is easy talk until the real battlefield appears and tests whether you can actually fight.
