English Translation
First, the great burden of ego must fall away; only then does receiving instruction bring joy. Memorizing scriptures by rote is useless so long as the chitta remains impure. A horse carries heavy loads, yet gains nothing from them; recitation without devotion is just the same. Says Tuka, hold steadfast faith, if you truly seek the Lord of Pandhari.
We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.
In Plain Words
First the great pride must fall away; only then does instruction bring joy. Heaping up scripture by rote is useless while the heart stays impure. A horse carries no small load, yet gains nothing by it; recitation without devotion is just the same. Tuka says: hold steadfast faith, if it is the Lord of Pandhari you truly want.
What it means
Tukaram sets the order of things straight: the ego has to go down before any teaching can take hold. Where pride is intact, instruction cannot even be received with joy, and memorized scripture is dead weight on an unpurified heart. His image is exact: a packhorse carries a heavy load all day and is none the wiser for it, and rote learning without devotion carries you nowhere the same way. If you actually want the Lord of Pandhari, the path is not more recitation but steadfast faith and a heart made clean.
