English Translation

Hiring someone to weep does not bring real tears or genuine love. In the same way, what value has mere talk of devotion? It is the logic of colored glass, not true gems. Under compulsion one makes a show of feeling, but behind it lies the urge to flee. Says Tuka, the light of a firefly needs no wick.

We ask forgiveness for any inaccuracies in rendering Tukaram ji’s original Marathi.

In Plain Words

Hire someone to weep, and there is no real grief and no love in it. Just so, what is mere talk of devotion worth? It is the logic of colored glass passed off as a jewel. Held to it by force, a person makes a show of feeling, but behind it the foot is already turned to run. Tuka says: the light of a firefly needs no wick.

What it means

Tukaram exposes counterfeit devotion with two cutting pictures. A hired mourner weeps on cue, but there is no grief and no love behind the tears; talk of bhakti without real feeling is exactly that, colored glass sold as a gem. He notices the tell of the fake: a person pressed into devotion will perform the look of feeling while inwardly already turning to flee. The closing image catches the difference between forced and genuine: a firefly carries its own light and needs no wick, no outside fuel, just as true devotion glows from within and does not have to be propped up by show or pressure.
