घरटी चक्रफेरा । जन्ममृत्याचा भोंवरा ॥4॥

नानाहव्यासांची जोडी। तृष्णा करी देशधडी ॥5॥

चरणीं ठेवा चित्त । ह्मणवा देवाचे अंकित ॥6॥

छंद नानापरी । कळा न पविजे हरी ॥7॥

जगाचा जनिता । भुक्तिमुक्तींचा ही दाता ॥8॥

English Translation

Remember the God of Pandhari, holding devotion in your chitta. If you do not make the effort, ruin will come. Untangle quickly the net that darkness has cast. The spinning wheel of birth and death is a relentless whirlpool. Various occupations and their accumulations only bring scattered wandering through craving. Fix your mind on His feet and call yourself God's own. Indulging in many diversions and tricks will not lead you to Hari. He is the Father of the world, the Giver of both enjoyment and liberation. Do not say 'mine, mine' and carry that heavy burden. Why has their wisdom departed? There is no awareness of what lies beyond. Even the smallest of the small find fulfillment in Vitthal. His mark is upon the three worlds; this generous One is the crown jewel. The wavering one goes to waste; without patience, he sinks. If you do not waver, the reward comes right to your door. Nothing of this body endures; it is wholly perishable. The blessed one who revels in Hari's kirtan is truly fortunate. He takes you from this bank to the far shore; strive hard and become a hero. Compassion means letting the ego go. The craving for wealth and grain misleads; serving family becomes a trap. Take the Name of Govinda; this alone is true fortune. Spend your strength in serving others; ward off slander. Fruit and pleasure come as God sees fit for each. Let this be your cherished practice: sing Govinda, Govinda. Never yield your devotion into the hands of pretenders. Once you begin, do not abandon the path; laziness only puts mud in your mouth. Fame, glory, and honor come through joining with Narayana. If His light eclipses all else, then this duality disappears. Desiring nothing existent or non-existent leads to stillness. It is desire itself that binds, in chains, ropes, and fetters. One cannot see the end through closed eyes. Do not worry; otherwise you become an animal. The harvest of honest labor ripens from the cultivated field. Welfare is in your own hands, yet you do not act. Wear the ornaments of tulsi beads and sacred marks. Says Tuka, see the fame the servants of Vishnu have earned.

He throws you from this bank to the far shore; strike out with your arms and be a hero. Its name is compassion, the moment the ego goes. Greed for wealth and grain misleads; service of family becomes a snare. Take the Name of Govinda; this alone is the true fortune. Spend your strength helping others; drive off slander. Fruit and pleasure come to each as God sees fit. Let this be your good habit: on the tongue, Govinda, Govinda. Never hand your worship over to pretenders. Once you start, do not leave the path; laziness only fills your mouth with dirt. Fame, glory, honor come if Narayana is gained. As the sun blots out lesser lights, so this duality disappears. Wanting nothing, existent or non-existent, brings you to stillness. It is craving itself that binds you, in chains and ropes and fetters. You cannot see the end with your eyes shut. Do not grieve; otherwise you become a donkey, a dog. The harvest of honest labor ripens from the tended field. The good is in your own hand, yet look, you will not act. Put on the ornaments: tulsi beads, the sacred mark. Tuka says: see the fame the servants of Vishnu have won.

This is an alphabet poem, a teaching strung verse by verse, and its single command is to remember the God of Pandhari and untangle yourself from the net of darkness before life runs out. Tukaram names the trap precisely: the spinning household, the whirlpool of birth and death, the scattering pull of many cravings, and above all the 'mine, mine' of the ego that loads you down. Against it he sets the cure, devotion fixed on Vitthal's feet, the Name of Govinda on the tongue, service of others in place of greed, and the patience not to waver. The stakes are stated bluntly: the body is perishable, the chance is now, and a wavering man simply sinks while the steady one finds the gain delivered to his own door. He ends by pointing to the devotees of Vishnu and the fame they have earned, as living proof that this path carries a person from this bank to the far shore.
