Shiva turns from his own visit to the reason Garuda sought the crow. During Rama's play of battle, Indrajit cast the serpent bonds around the Lord. Narada sent Garuda, the enemy of serpents, who came with the force of great wings and cut the coils away.
The bonds fell, but Garuda did not fly free of what he had seen. Fierce sorrow entered his heart. He had heard that Rama was the all-pervading Brahman, stainless, beyond speech, beyond maya and delusion. Yet before his own eyes the Lord had appeared held by a demon's weapon until Garuda arrived to release him.
The battlefield receded beneath his wings, but the image traveled with him. How could the Supreme Master enact helplessness? Was the avatara truly what scripture proclaimed? Garuda's service had succeeded outwardly while inward certainty had broken. The Lord's battle lila had become a doorway through which a deeper question entered, one that strength, speed, and nearness to Vishnu could not answer.
Garuda breaks the serpent-noose around Rama, then discovers a subtler knot tightening inside his own heart.

गिरिजा कहेउँ सो सब इतिहासा। मैं जेहि समय गयउँ खग पासा।। अब सो कथा सुनहु जेही हेतू। गयउ काग पहिं खग कुल केतू।। जब रघुनाथ कीन्हि रन क्रीड़ा। समुझत चरित होति मोहि ब्रीड़ा।। इंद्रजीत कर आपु बँधायो। तब नारद मुनि गरुड़ पठायो।। बंधन काटि गयो उरगादा। उपजा हृदयँ प्रचंड बिषादा।। प्रभु बंधन समुझत बहु भाँती। करत बिचार उरग आराती।। ब्यापक ब्रह्म बिरज बागीसा। माया मोह पार परमीसा।। सो अवतार सुनेउँ जग माहीं। देखेउँ सो प्रभाव कछु नाहीं।।
O Girija, I have told you all that history, from the time I went to that bird. Now listen to the story of why the king of the bird clan went to the crow. When Raghunath performed His play of battle, understanding His deeds brought confusion to my mind. Indrajit had the Lord bound by his own power, and then sage Narada sent Garuda there. The enemy of serpents cut the bonds and departed, but intense sorrow arose in his heart. The enemy of serpents pondered the Lord's bondage in many ways, engaged in deep contemplation. The all-pervading Brahman, passionless, beyond speech. The supreme Master, beyond Maya and delusion. I had heard of that Avatara in the world, but I saw none of that divine power.
