Bharata and Shatrughna thrill as they hear the letter, their love too great for their bodies to contain. The entire assembly rejoices at the purity of Bharata's devotion.
Dasharatha seats the messengers near and asks for what writing cannot fully give. You saw my boys with your own eyes. Tell me they are well. One dark, one fair, young, carrying bows and quivers beside Kaushika. Did you recognize them? What are they like?
Love makes the king repeat himself. Since Vishwamitra led them away, this is the first certain news. How did Janaka come to know them? The messengers smile at a father who knows his sons by every visible sign yet longs to receive them again through another person's witness.
Dasharatha has the letter in his hands, but love asks the eyewitnesses to make his sons present once more.
Read the passage from the Manas
Hearing the letter, both brothers thrilled with joy; their boundless love could not be contained within their bodies. Seeing Bharata's pure and sacred love, the entire assembly was filled with a special happiness. Then the king seated the messengers nearby and spoke sweet, charming words: 'Brothers, tell me of the welfare of both my young sons, whom you have seen with your own eyes. One dark-complexioned, one fair, bearing bows and quivers, young in age, in the company of sage Kaushika. Do you recognize them? Tell me their nature.' Overcome with love, the king asked again and again. 'From the day the sage took them away, only today have I received true news of them. Tell me, how did the King of Videha come to know them?' Hearing these loving words, the messengers smiled.
