In a beautiful forest hermitage, the learned sage Vishwamitra performs prayer and sacrifice. Maricha and Subahu rush upon the sacred rites, terrifying the ascetics and defiling what they cannot endure.
Worry enters Gadhi's son's mind. These demons cannot be slain without Hari, and the Lord has already incarnated to relieve Earth's burden. The threatened yajna becomes a blessed pretext by which the sage may go to Ram's feet and ask that both brothers accompany him.
Beneath the need for protection lies a devotee's longing. Vishwamitra will behold with joy filled eyes the Lord who mirrors knowledge, detachment, and every virtue. The journey toward Ayodhya begins inside that hope.
Smoke rises from the broken sacrifice while Vishwamitra's heart turns toward Ram.

यह सब चरित कहा मैं गाई। आगिलि कथा सुनहु मन लाई।। बिस्वामित्र महामुनि ग्यानी। बसहि बिपिन सुभ आश्रम जानी।। जहँ जप जग्य मुनि करही। अति मारीच सुबाहुहि डरहीं।। देखत जग्य निसाचर धावहि। करहि उपद्रव मुनि दुख पावहिं।। गाधितनय मन चिंता ब्यापी। हरि बिनु मरहि न निसिचर पापी।। तब मुनिवर मन कीन्ह बिचारा। प्रभु अवतरेउ हरन महि भारा।। एहुँ मिस देखौं पद जाई। करि बिनती आनौ दोउ भाई।। ग्यान बिराग सकल गुन अयना। सो प्रभु मै देखब भरि नयना।।
All this I have sung before you. Now listen with full attention to the story that follows. The great and wise sage Vishwamitra (Vishvamitra) dwelt in the forest, but hearing of his tapasya, Ravana's demons began to trouble him.
