Tulsidas bows until his forehead reaches the dust of the Guru's lotus feet. In that dust he sees pollen, fragrant with devotion and coloured by love. He sees a healing powder ground from the root of immortality, medicine for the entire household of afflictions born from worldly life. Upon Shiva's body it becomes spotless vibhuti, the ash from which beauty, blessing, and joy arise.
The images gather and deepen. The same dust sweeps the grime from the mirror of the devotee's heart. Worn as a tilak, it calls scattered virtues into order. Above it, the nails of the Guru's feet shine like clustered jewels, their remembered light entering the seeker and awakening a vision not granted by ordinary eyes.
Delusion had made the world a long night. Now the inner lids open. Faults and sorrows recede, and within the mountains, forests, and deep earth of Ram's story, hidden gems begin to burn with colour. The Leela was never poor. The eye had not yet learned to see its treasure.
The Guru's foot dust touches the brow, and buried jewels answer with light.
Read the passage from the Manas
I bow to the dust of the Guru's lotus feet. That dust is full of colour, fragrance, and the sweetness of devotion. It is a beautiful powder ground from the root of immortality, a medicine that heals the entire household of ailments born from worldly existence. On the body of Shiva, that dust becomes the sacred vibhuti, spotless and radiant, the very birthplace of beauty, blessing, and quiet joy. It sweeps the grime from the gentle mirror of the devotee's heart. Applied as a tilak on the forehead, it brings all virtues naturally under one's sway. The light that streams from the jewel-like nails of Sri Guru's feet: simply remembering that light, a divine vision awakens within the heart.
