Bharata swears by the pollen of Rama's lotus feet, the blessed dust at the boundary of truth, virtue, and joy. Waking, sleeping, and dreaming, he desires one thing: the natural love by which a servant serves the master without self-interest, deceit, or hunger for any of life's four rewards.

No service equals obedience, and even that capacity comes only through the Lord's grace. As Bharata says it, love overwhelms him. His body thrills, his eyes fill, and he seizes Rama's feet with a distress too intimate for language.

The ocean of compassion takes Bharata by the hand, honors his words, and seats him close. Rama himself grows tender before the assembly. The servant asks for obedience, yet the Lord answers first with touch and nearness, revealing that true command arises within a relationship already filled by grace.

Bharata asks only to obey, and Rama answers by lifting him from the feet and seating him beside the heart.

Read the passage from the Manas

I swear by the sacred pollen of my Lord's lotus feet, that blessed dust which is the very wellspring of truth, virtue, and joy. With that oath upon my lips, I speak what truly lives in my heart, my one longing whether waking, sleeping, or dreaming. May I know only the natural love of a servant for his master, forsaking self-interest, deceit, and all four fruits of worldly life. There is no service to a noble master equal to obedience; and that blessing, O Lord, a devotee receives only by Your grace. Saying this, Bharata was overcome with love. His body trembled with sacred joy; his eyes brimmed with tears. He clasped the Lord's lotus feet in loving distress. That moment of pure love, no words can ever hold. The ocean of compassion honored his sweet words, took him by the hand, and seated him close by His side. Hearing Bharata's prayer and beholding his nature, Raghunatha Himself grew tender with love before the whole assembly.
