Manthara Sharpens the Two Boons into a Dagger

Once Kaikeyi consents, Manthara sharpens deceit upon her hardened heart. The queen continues grazing upon gentle words, unaware of the sacrifice toward which they lead, while honey hides the taste of poison.
Manthara recalls two boons Dasharatha once promised and kept in trust. Claim them now: the kingdom for Bharata and forest exile for Ram. Wait until the king swears by Ram so his word cannot be withdrawn.
The night is made to feel like the final opening before permanent ruin. Strategy, oath, motherhood, and revenge lock into place. Manthara urges Kaikeyi to hold these instructions dearer than life, turning an old promise into a blade aimed at the household she loves.
Two forgotten boons rise from the past, newly sharpened into kingdom for Bharata and forest for Ram.

कुबरीं करि कबुली कैकेई। कपट छुरी उर पाहन टेई।। लखइ न रानि निकट दुखु कैंसे। चरइ हरित तिन बलिपसु जैसें।। सुनत बात मृदु अंत कठोरी। देति मनहुँ मधु माहुर घोरी।। कहइ चेरि सुधि अहइ कि नाही। स्वामिनि कहिहु कथा मोहि पाहीं।। दुइ बरदान भूप सन थाती। मागहु आजु जुड़ावहु छाती।। सुतहि राजु रामहि बनवासू। देहु लेहु सब सवति हुलासु।। भूपति राम सपथ जब करई। तब मागेहु जेहिं बचनु न टरई।। होइ अकाजु आजु निसि बीतें। बचनु मोर प्रिय मानेहु जी तें।।
The hunchbacked maid won Kaikeyi's consent, then sharpened the dagger of deceit upon the stone of her hardened heart. The queen does not see the approaching sorrow, just as the sacrificial animal grazes on green grass, unaware of its fate. The words sound gentle at first but are cruel at their end, as though one were mixing honey with deadly poison. The maid says, "Do you remember or not, O mistress? Let me recount the whole story to you. Two boons the king promised you long ago, held in trust. Claim them today and cool the fire in your heart. Give the kingdom to your son and forest exile to Rama. Seize every last joy from your co-wife. When the king swears his oath in Rama's name, make your demand then, so that his word cannot be taken back. If this night passes, the chance is lost forever. Hold my words dearer than life itself."
