सुनि ब्याकुल भए, उतरु कछु कह्यो न जाइ। जानि जिय बिधि बाम दीन्हों मोहि सरुष सजाइ॥ १ ॥ कहत हिय मेरी कठिनाई लखि गई प्रीति लजाइ। आजु अवसर ऐसेहू जौं न चले प्रान बजाइ॥ २ ॥ इतहि सीय-सनेह-संकट उतहि राम-रजाइ। मौनही गहि चरन, गौने सिख-सुआसिष पाइ॥ ३ ॥ प्रेम-निधि पितुको कहे मैं परुष बचन अघाइ। पाप तेहि परिताप तुलसी उचित सहे सिराइ॥ ४ ॥
Hearing her, Lakṣmaṇa became distraught and could utter no reply. Within he understood: hostile fate, enraged, has given me this punishment. (1) He said in his heart: seeing my hardness, even Love has grown ashamed, since at such a moment as this my life still does not sound its departure. (2) On one side stood the anguish of love for Sītā; on the other, Rāma's command. Silently he clasped her feet, received counsel and blessing, and went. (3) I spoke harsh words without restraint to my father, who was a treasury of love. Tulsī says that for that sin this fitting anguish had to be borne to its end. (4)
