“Lord, hearing your fair fame with my own ears, I have come for refuge. You ended the cycle of becoming for Ahalyā in stone form, the boatman, the vulture, and Śabarī; you removed the distress of Sugrīva, who had reached the limit of sorrow and exhaustion. (1) O lotus-eyed Rāma, remover of calamity, dark as a garland of fresh blue lotuses and rainclouds: matted locks shine upon your head, a lovely ascetic garment is at your waist, and you, steadfast hero of Raghu’s line, bear bow, arrows, and quiver. (2) My name is Vibhīṣaṇa, brother of the lord of demons. Great shame born of my brother’s contempt consumes me. O Purifier of the Fallen, Guardian of the Surrendered, Ocean of Compassion, shelter me at the feet served by Lakṣmaṇa. (3) Hearing these gentle words woven of humility and love, the Lord’s body thrilled and his eyes filled with tears. Calling him ‘Lord of Laṅkā,’ the remover of the lowly one’s sorrow, fault, and poverty clasped him to his breast and gave him the royal mark. (4) Though born among night-rangers and in every way counted an enemy, the maker of auspiciousness made him a vessel of all welfare. Tulsī the servant asks: when anyone cried ‘Protect me,’ whom did the tender-hearted jewel of Raghu’s line not save—and make capable of saving others? (5)
