Lakṣmaṇa and Hanumān went to bring him. They met joyfully, asked after one another’s welfare, and, with mutual modesty, exchanged honor. (1) “The command has been given; please proceed,” said the Ocean of Compassion. From afar Vibhīṣaṇa saw the Friend of the Lowly, as though Rāma were already granting him the boon of fearlessness. (2) In gentleness he is a thousand moons, and in splendor the very light of a hundred crore suns. For his devotees’ good he is worth a crore mothers and fathers; to their enemies he is a crore consuming fires. (3) He counts a servant’s dust-like virtues as mountains, yet shyly regards his own mountain-like virtues as atoms of dust. The Vedas sing of his rampart-like arms and his unalterable word. (4) With lotus hands he adjusted his beautiful bow, quiver, and arrows. While the discussion of Vibhīṣaṇa continued, he listened with a pure and attentive mind. (5) The gods rejoiced and showered flowers; auspicious omens proclaimed coming welfare. Tulsī says those who remember and meditate upon that lovely hour have fulfilled the purpose of life. (6)
