Her anguish for the Lord’s sight is exceedingly great. In separation from Rāma, beneath the aśoka tree, Sītā passes each instant as though it were an age. (1) Again and again she fills her lovely lotus eyes and pours their hot water upon her breast, as though, seeing fresh wounds of separation in her heart, she patiently washes them with a warm stream. (2) Tulsīdāsa says that although night and day, moment after moment, she beholds the Lord’s form within, the unbearable heat of her body does not depart; before outward separation, her inner state admits defeat.
