Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sītā sit beneath the fine leaf-hut at Pañcavaṭī, speaking together of sacred matters. (1) Seeing the counterfeit deer made of gold and jewels, the young lady smilingly tells her beloved: “If caught, this lovely deer is fit to be kept; if killed, its hide too will be beautiful.” (2) Hearing his beloved’s words, Raghunātha smiles and, conquered by love, quietly takes up bow and arrow. The deer runs, looking back again and again, for it recognizes the protector of the sage’s sacrifice. (3) Behind the golden deer, his tender and enchanting form shines wonderfully. His running, bending, looking, and pausing in weariness remain deeply lodged in Tulsīdāsa’s heart. (4)
