आली! हौं इन्हहि बुझावौं कैसे? लेत हिये भरि भरि पतिको हित, मातुहेतु सुत जैसे॥ १ ॥ बार-बार हिहिनात हेरि उत, जो बोले कोउ द्वारे। अंग लगाइ लिए बारतें करुनामय सुत प्यारे॥ २ ॥ लोचन सजल, सदा सोवत-से, खान-पान बिसराए। चितवत चौंकि नाम सुनि, सोचत राम-सुरति उर आए॥ ३ ॥ तुलसी प्रभुके बिरह-बधिक हति राजहंस-से जोरे। ऐसेहु दुखित देखि हौं जीवति राम-लखनके घोरे॥ ४ ॥
Friend, how can I console these horses? They hold love for their master deep within their hearts, as sons cherish their mother. (1) Whenever someone speaks at the door, they look that way and neigh again and again. My compassionate, beloved son used to call them close and embrace them. (2) Their eyes remain wet; they seem always asleep and have forgotten food and drink. Hearing his name, they start and gaze about, then grieve as Rāma’s memory rises within. (3) Tulsī says the hunter of separation from the Lord has struck this pair, like two royal swans. Seeing even Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa’s horses so afflicted, I still remain alive. (4)
