Raghupati, why do you not take me with you? Lord, for what reason do you repeatedly command me, ‘Go to the city’? (1) Though I am exceedingly low, crooked-minded, and born of one who committed the offense, I knew in my heart the tender nature of the Protector of the surrendered and came seeking refuge. (2) If, abandoning your feet, I hold any other refuge concealed within my heart, then reject me, Compassionate Lord, benefactor of the lowly and witness within. (3) Therefore, Lord, I say again and again: you are my lord, father, mother, and master. Without devotion, a human body is wasted like that of a donkey, dog, or jackal. (4) Hearing his brother’s words, the Lord’s lotus eyes filled with tears. Tulsīdāsa says that in supreme compassion he seized Bharata’s arm and drew him to his breast. (5)
