From afar Bharata beheld the two heroic brothers: broad-chested, with beautiful arms reaching to their knees, one dark-bodied and one fair. (1) Matted locks crowned their heads, their eyes were lotuses, and ascetic cloth formed their dress. Quivers rested nearby; Sītā shone beside them, while bows and arrows moved in their hands. (2) His mind pressed forward, but his body grew slack with horripilation and his lotus eyes filled with tears. His feet seemed to sink into the mire of hesitation, and with the strength of love he drew them out in courage. (3) Tulsīdāsa says that, seeing Bharata’s state, the Lord rose and ran toward him, utterly overcome. The treasury of compassion lifted him, clasped him to his breast, and removed the pain born of separation. (4)
