अवध बिलोकि हौं जीवत रामभद्र-बिहीन! कहा करिहैं आइ सानुज भरत धरमधुरीन॥ १ ॥ राम-सोक-सनेह-संकुल, तनु बिकल, मनु लीन। टूटि तारो गगन-सो ज्यों होत छिन-छिन छीन॥ २ ॥ हृदय समुझि सनेह सादर प्रेम पावन मीन। करी तुलसीदास दसरथ प्रीति-परिमिति पीन॥ ३ ॥

Shall I remain alive, looking upon Ayodhyā without Rāmabhadra? What will righteous Bharata do when he returns with his younger brother? (1) Overwhelmed by grief and love for Rāma, his body distraught and mind submerged, he wanes moment by moment like a star broken loose from the sky. (2) Understanding the reverent love within his heart—a pure fish in love’s waters—Tulsīdāsa made Daśaratha the full measure of devotion. (3)
