The mother gazes upon the bow and arrows, Again and again pressing the Lord’s lovely sandals to her heart and eyes. (1) At times she goes as before to wake him with tender words: ‘Rise, child! Your mother would sacrifice herself for your face; your younger brother and friends are all at the door.’ (2) At times she says, ‘It is very late, brother; go to the king. Call your companions and eat whatever pleases you—your mother offers herself for you.’ (3) Then she remembers Rāma’s departure for the forest and stands stunned, like a painted figure. Tulsīdāsa says that describing that moment is like attempting to instruct love itself. (4)
