Tender as a śirīṣa blossom and the very limit of beauty, Sītā was taken along by Rāma only with the deepest hesitation. Knowing the nature and law of love, the compassionate Lord— Who is life itself to his brother and the life within his beloved’s life—consented. (1) From Ayodhyā’s garden-bed Kaikeyī uprooted the wish-fulfilling tree and desire-vine, And planted in their place a vine of calamity. For herself, her husband and son, elders, beloved kin, And even the people, she created a crooked and unbearable condition. (2) Their lotus feet wear no sandals, while the road is harsh; How have they endured thus far, and how will they continue—what strange course is this? The men and women on the road are absorbed in this anxious thought, And every good mind is dyed in the color of love for Rāma. (3) One says, ‘Fate, adverse there, has become favorable to us; It turned its back upon them, but its gracious gaze fell here.’ Tulsī says that for us, together with the forest-dwelling sages, Everything has unexpectedly turned out more than satisfying. (4)
