Casting off shame and arming for battle, the quarrelsome kings raged: ‘What if he has strung the bow? The wedding will occur only after much hard swallowing!’ They shouted, unsheathed their spears, and flashed their keen swords. (1) Learning this, the townspeople were frightened; Lakṣmaṇa reassured them and laughed: ‘Pināka has already measured and weighed their strength very well. These boys disgrace their clans; the fools merely beat their cheeks— or else, cruel and in Death's power, they flare up in delirium.’ (2) The prince raised his brows—who now could bear to face him? Everywhere they fell senseless, like scarecrows in a field. Seeing them, the men and women said, ‘Their mothers must have borne them after eating greens, and these wretches' thick arms were fattened by eating oilcake.’ (3) The world-lotus and the flocks of cakravāka birds rejoiced, while the sun of Rāma's majesty dried up the lake of sorrow. The good people who saw those events were content then; the holy who hear them now—and Tulsī too—are content. (4)
