The gods sing in pure and excellent voices: “The son born to Queen Kausalyā is the root of blessing for millions of worlds.” (1) Month, fortnight, date, weekday, star, planet, conjunction, and ascendant have all turned auspicious. Water, earth, sky, and the saints' hearts are glad; all ten directions thrill within. (2) Flowers rain down; congratulations fill city and sky; the joy cannot be told. The countryside and capital exult just as the king and women's palace do. (3) Gods, Nāgas, sages, humans, and their households are freed from sorrow and weariness. At the very same time Rāvaṇa, the night-rovers, and Laṅkā grow anxious with foreboding. (4) The king worships gods, ancestors, guru, and Brahmins and gives each a gift suited to their wish. He honors sages' wives, women of the city, and married women in a thousand ways. (5) Filled to satisfaction, petitioners depart as donors themselves, blessing him: “May Maheśa and Bhavānī show the same favor to Kaikeyī and Sumitrā.” (6) On the following day those two royal women also become mines of every blessing. A birth-song rises within the birth-song, as though creation itself were steeped in celebration. (7) They sing and dance—a sight pleasing to my heart—and Ayodhyā grows richer in happiness. Giving and receiving, dressing and adorning one another, the people are satiated with delight. (8) Seeing the wonder and tumult of songs and drums, the world looks on with longing. All the beauty of Viṣṇu's, Brahmā's, and Śiva's cities covets Kosalapura. (9) The royal women dwell on the earth of bliss, their marriage-lines and wombs fulfilled. Umā, Lakṣmī, and Brahmāṇī bless them repeatedly and respectfully praise their fortune. (10) Whoever did not rejoice to see Daśaratha's wealth and splendor increase— fame, welfare, majesty, victory, prosperity, and powers all grew angry with them. (11) Following worldly and Vedic rule, the learned guru duly performs the sixth- and twelfth-day rites. He gives the lovely names Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Śatrughna, and Bharata. (12) Fate perfumes the sesame of joy with flowers of merit and presses it carefully in the mill. All the oil of happiness and affection goes to Daśaratha; the dry cake and dregs remain for the guardians of the quarters. (13) Day by day the rising celebration grows; the world surges, and every house tells Ayodhyā's story. Holding that company in his heart, Tulsī sings the glory of Rāma's birth. (14)
