Today supreme auspiciousness fills Kosalapura: news has come that the king has four sons. In every house a lovely birth-song resounds; drums sound in the sky and through the city. (1) Gods, Kinnaras, and sages ready their conveyances; knowing the occasion, singers begin music suited to the hour. Apsarases dance joyfully in the sky and shower clusters of flowers again and again. (2) Overjoyed, the king quickly summons his guru and the Brahmins, then enters the inner palace. He performs the birth rite and gives gold, garments, jewels, and herds of ornamented cows. (3) Young women take trays filled with leaves, fruits, flowers, sacred grass, curd, and auspicious pigment. They go singing; the lanes grow crowded, while eloquent bards recite the glory of the royal line. (4) Golden vessels, fly-whisks, banners, flags, and fresh festoons appear everywhere. They scatter colored powder and sprinkle fragrant paste, until all the people are dyed in one hue. (5) Joy surges through the three worlds; by giving, everyone empties out the stores of home. Tulsīdāsa says: at a glance of Rāma's grace, those stores appear full once more. (6)
