The dance with the gopīs 67 of 100

The Rāsa-Līlā

10 verses

By you who are of the form of the highest blissful rasa, by the play of bhoga having been attained, having attained the unbounded fullness of bliss, the great pride came to the lotus-eyed ones. The daśaka tells the dance itself: the moment that defines Vṛndāvana for all later devotion.

Daśaka 67, Verse 1
स्फुरत्परानन्दरसात्मकेन त्वया समासादितभोगलीलाः ।
असीममानन्दभरं प्रपन्ना महान्तमापुर्मदमम्बुजाक्ष्यः

sphuratparānandarasātmakena tvayā samāsāditabhogalīlāḥ asīmamānandabharaṁ prapannā mahāntamāpurmadamambujākṣyaḥ

By you who are of the form of the highest blissful rasa, by the play of bhoga having been attained, the lotus-eyed gopis, having attained the unbounded fullness of bliss, came to a great pride.

Daśaka 67, Verse 2
निलीयतेऽसौ मयि मय्यमायं रमापतिर्विश्वमनोभिरामः ।
इतिस्म सर्वाः कलिताभिमाना निरीक्ष्य गोविन्द तिरोहितोऽभूः

nilīyate'sau mayi mayyamāyaṁ ramāpatirviśvamanobhirāmaḥ itisma sarvāḥ kalitābhimānā nirīkṣya govinda tirohito'bhūḥ

'He who is the lord of Lakṣmī, the joy of the world, the un-māyā lord, has settled in me alone,' so each thought, secretly proud. Knowing their pride, Govinda vanished.

Daśaka 67, Verse 3
राधाभिधां तावदजातगर्वामतिप्रियां गोपवधूं मुरारे ।
भवानुपादाय गतो विदूरं तया सह स्वैरविहारकारी

rādhābhidhāṁ tāvadajātagarvāmatipriyāṁ gopavadhūṁ murāre bhavānupādāya gato vidūraṁ tayā saha svairavihārakārī

Suddenly, the gopis stood alone in the moonlight. The lord they had been dancing with was gone. They wandered the forest weeping, calling his name.

Daśaka 67, Verse 4
तिरोहितेऽथ त्वयि जाततापाः समं समेताः कमलायताक्ष्यः ।
वने वने त्वां परिमार्गयन्त्यो विषादमापुर्भगवन्नपारम्

tirohite'tha tvayi jātatāpāḥ samaṁ sametāḥ kamalāyatākṣyaḥ vane vane tvāṁ parimārgayantyo viṣādamāpurbhagavannapāram

'Have you seen him? Have you seen him?' they asked the trees, the deer, the river. Each tree they spoke to had been touched by him; each was a memory; none could tell where he was now.

Daśaka 67, Verse 5
हा चूत हा चम्पक कर्णिकार हा मल्लिके मालति बालवल्ल्यः ।
किं वीक्षितो नो हृदयैकचोर इत्यादि तास्त्वत्प्रवणा विलेपुः

hā cūta hā campaka karṇikāra hā mallike mālati bālavallyaḥ kiṁ vīkṣito no hṛdayaikacora ityādi tāstvatpravaṇā vilepuḥ

By their loss they were taught what they had not yet known: he was not theirs alone. He was each one's, each one's only, but never the property of the one. Pride had been the wall.

Daśaka 67, Verse 6
निरीक्षितोऽयं सखि पङ्कजाक्षः पुरो ममेत्याकुलमालपन्ती ।
त्वां भावनाचक्षुषि वीक्ष्य काचित्तापं सखीनां द्विगुणीचकार

nirīkṣito'yaṁ sakhi paṅkajākṣaḥ puro mametyākulamālapantī tvāṁ bhāvanācakṣuṣi vīkṣya kācittāpaṁ sakhīnāṁ dviguṇīcakāra

They sang the famous gopī-gīta. The song was the song of the longing soul; the song became the canon of all longing-songs after.

Daśaka 67, Verse 7
त्वदात्मिकास्ता यमुनातटान्ते तवानुचक्रुः किल चेष्टितानि ।
विचित्य भूयोऽपि तथैव मानात् त्वया वियुक्तां ददृशुश्च राधाम्

tvadātmikāstā yamunātaṭānte tavānucakruḥ kila ceṣṭitāni vicitya bhūyo'pi tathaiva mānāt tvayā viyuktāṁ dadṛśuśca rādhām

When they had been emptied entirely, when the pride had been removed, you returned. They saw him standing among them again, smiling with that ordinary smile.

Daśaka 67, Verse 8
ततः समं ता विपिने समन्तात्तमोवतारावधि मार्गयन्त्यः ।
पुनर्विमिश्रा यमुनातटान्ते भृशं विलेपुश्च जगुर्गुणांस्ते

tataḥ samaṁ tā vipine samantāttamovatārāvadhi mārgayantyaḥ punarvimiśrā yamunātaṭānte bhṛśaṁ vilepuśca jagurguṇāṁste

By that return, the rāsa became possible at the fullness it was meant to be. Each gopī danced with him; he was beside each one at once.

Daśaka 67, Verse 9
तथाव्यथासंकुलमानसानां व्रजाङ्गनानां करुणैकसिन्धो ।
जगत्त्रयीमोहनमोहनात्मा त्वं प्रादुरासीरयि मन्दहासी

tathāvyathāsaṁkulamānasānāṁ vrajāṅganānāṁ karuṇaikasindho jagattrayīmohanamohanātmā tvaṁ prādurāsīrayi mandahāsī

Lord, by such necessary disappearance, the soul is made ready for the dance. Without the disappearance, the dance would not have been the dance.

Daśaka 67, Verse 10
सन्दिग्धसन्दर्शनमात्मकान्तं त्वां वीक्ष्य तन्व्यस्सहसा तदानीम् ।
किं किं न चक्रुः प्रमदातिभारात् स त्वं गदात्पालय मारुतेश

sandigdhasandarśanamātmakāntaṁ tvāṁ vīkṣya tanvyassahasā tadānīm kiṁ kiṁ na cakruḥ pramadātibhārāt sa tvaṁ gadātpālaya māruteśa

Lord of the wind-house, by your disappearance and your return, save me.
