The Forest Fire

While you were absorbed in play with the bands of children, Pralamba being slain, the cows wandering at will, intent on grass, went far. The daśaka tells the moment when the forest fire surrounded the cowherds and Krishna swallowed it.

Daśaka 58, Verse 1
त्वयि विहरणलोले बालजालैः प्रलम्ब
प्रमथनसविळम्बे धेनवः स्वैरचाराः ।
तृणकुतुकनिविष्टा दूरदूरं चरन्त्यः
किमपि विपिनमैषीकाख्यमीषांबभूवुः

tvayi viharaṇalole bālajālaiḥ pralamba pramathanasaviḻambe dhenavaḥ svairacārāḥ tṛṇakutukaniviṣṭā dūradūraṁ carantyaḥ kimapi vipinamaiṣīkākhyamīṣāṁbabhūvuḥ

While you were absorbed in play with the bands of children, Pralamba being slain, the cows wandering at will, intent on grass, went far.

Daśaka 58, Verse 2
अनधिगतनिदाघक्रौर्यबृन्दावनान्तात्
बहिरिदमुपयाताः काननं धेनवस्ताः ।
तव विरहविषण्णा ऊष्मलग्रीष्मताप
प्रसरविसरदम्भस्याकुलाः स्तम्भमापुः

anadhigatanidāghakrauryabṛndāvanāntāt bahiridamupayātāḥ kānanaṁ dhenavastāḥ tava virahaviṣaṇṇā ūṣmalagrīṣmatāpa prasaravisaradambhasyākulāḥ stambhamāpuḥ

Out from the deep-forest-edge of Vṛndāvana, beyond the unknown summer-fierceness, into a wider forest those cows reached. Pained by your absence, they were further pained by the heat.

Daśaka 58, Verse 3
तदनु सह सहायैर्दूरमन्विष्य शौरे
गळितसरणिमुञ्जारण्यसञ्जातखेदम् ।
पशुकुलमभिवीक्ष्य क्षिप्रमानेतुमारात्
त्वयि गतवति ही ही सर्वतोऽग्निर्जजृम्भे

tadanu saha sahāyairdūramanviṣya śaure gaḻitasaraṇimuñjāraṇyasañjātakhedam paśukulamabhivīkṣya kṣipramānetumārāt tvayi gatavati hī hī sarvato'gnirjajṛmbhe

When the cowherds-children noticed, going searching for the cattle, they fell into the wide forest fire that had risen suddenly all around.

Daśaka 58, Verse 4
सकलहरिति दीप्ते घोरभाङ्कारभीमे
शिखिनि विहतमार्गा अर्धदग्धा इवार्ताः ।
अहह भुवनबन्धो पाहि पाहीति सर्वे
शरणमुपगतास्त्वां तापहर्तारमेकम्

sakalahariti dīpte ghorabhāṅkārabhīme śikhini vihatamārgā ardhadagdhā ivārtāḥ ahaha bhuvanabandho pāhi pāhīti sarve śaraṇamupagatāstvāṁ tāpahartāramekam

The fire, like a great curtain of red, rose on every side; the cattle stood trembling in the middle. The boys ran to you, calling.

Daśaka 58, Verse 5
अलमलमतिभीत्य सर्वतो मीलयध्वं
भृशमिति तव वाचा मीलिताक्षेषु तेषु ।
क्वनु दवदहनोऽसौ कुत्र मुञ्जाटवी सा
सपदि ववृतिरे ते हन्त भण्डीरदेशे

alamalamatibhītya sarvato mīlayadhvaṁ bhṛśamiti tava vācā mīlitākṣeṣu teṣu kvanu davadahano'sau kutra muñjāṭavī sā sapadi vavṛtire te hanta bhaṇḍīradeśe

'Close your eyes,' you said. They closed their eyes. When they opened them, the fire was gone, and they were standing on the safe banks of Bhāṇḍīra.

Daśaka 58, Verse 6
जय जय तव माया केयमीशेति तेषां
नुतिभिरुदितहासो बद्वनानाविलासः ।
पुनरपि विपिनान्ते प्राचरः पाटलादि
प्रसवनिकरमात्रग्राह्यघर्मानुभावे

jaya jaya tava māyā keyamīśeti teṣāṁ nutibhiruditahāso badvanānāvilāsaḥ punarapi vipinānte prācaraḥ pāṭalādi prasavanikaramātragrāhyagharmānubhāve

You had drunk the fire. The cowherds did not see how. They saw only you smiling, calm, and the cattle calm beside you.

Daśaka 58, Verse 7
त्वयि विमुखविमोच्चैस्तापभारं वहन्तं
तव भजनवदन्तः पङ्कमुच्छोषयन्तम् ।
तव भुजवदुदञ्चत् भूरितेजःप्रवाहं
तपसमयमनैषीर्यामुनेषु स्थलेषु

tvayi vimukhavimoccaistāpabhāraṁ vahantaṁ tava bhajanavadantaḥ paṅkamucchoṣayantam tava bhujavadudañcat bhūritejaḥpravāhaṁ tapasamayamanaiṣīryāmuneṣu sthaleṣu

Returning home, the boys told the story to their mothers. The mothers wept, kissed their sons, kissed you. The fire, they understood, had had a feast denied to it that day.

Daśaka 58, Verse 8
तदनु जलदजालैस्त्वद्वपुस्तुल्यभाभि
र्विकसदमलविद्यूत्पीतवासोविलासैः ।
सकलभुवनभाजां हर्षदां वर्षवेलां
क्षितिधरकुहरेषु स्वैरवासी व्यनैषीः

tadanu jaladajālaistvadvapustulyabhābhi rvikasadamalavidyūtpītavāsovilāsaiḥ sakalabhuvanabhājāṁ harṣadāṁ varṣavelāṁ kṣitidharakuhareṣu svairavāsī vyanaiṣīḥ

By such daily small-and-large rescues, the cowherd-place came to know what they housed. Yet you would not let them know it fully; you preferred to keep wearing the body of a child.

Daśaka 58, Verse 9
कुहरतलनिविष्टं त्वां गरिष्ठं गिरीन्द्रः
शिखिकुलनवकेकाकाकुभिः स्तोत्रकारी ।
स्फुटकुटजकदम्बस्तोमपुष्पाञ्जलिं च
प्रविदधदनुभेजे देव गोवर्धनोऽसौ

kuharatalaniviṣṭaṁ tvāṁ gariṣṭhaṁ girīndraḥ śikhikulanavakekākākubhiḥ stotrakārī sphuṭakuṭajakadambastomapuṣpāñjaliṁ ca pravidadhadanubheje deva govardhano'sau

Lord of the wind-house, take from me the inner forest-fires, the angers and lusts that surround the small herd of my mind.

Daśaka 58, Verse 10
अथ शरदमुपेतां तां भवद्भक्तचेतो
विमलसलिलपूरां मानयन्काननेषु ।
तृणाममलवनान्ते चारु सञ्चारयन् गाः
पवनपुरपते त्वं देहि मे देहसौख्यम्

atha śaradamupetāṁ tāṁ bhavadbhaktaceto vimalasalilapūrāṁ mānayankānaneṣu tṛṇāmamalavanānte cāru sañcārayan gāḥ pavanapurapate tvaṁ dehi me dehasaukhyam

Drink them as you drank that one. Save me.
