The Lord’s Reply

“The wise sage Vishvamitra asked my father and brought me here; I brought no one else with me, friends.

I brought only one heart—and you, darling, have stolen it, shooting your sidelong glance, friends.

It is growing late; let me go—heed what I say; standing here, I fall at your feet, friends.

My heart has been taken by force, darling sakhi; Srinidhi has carried it away and hidden it, friends.”

A Vision of the Kohbar

His dark body is naturally beautiful, its splendor shaming ten million gods of love.

His lotus-feet, lovely with red javaka, are ever shaded by the bee-like minds of sages.

His pure and lovely yellow dhoti steals the radiance of the young sun and lightning.

A melodious girdle and lovely waist-cord adorn him; his arms are broad and their ornaments beautiful.

His yellow sacred thread gives forth magnificent beauty; the signet-ring upon his hand steals every heart.

Every article of wedding array shines upon him; broad ornaments reign across his breast.

A yellow upper-cloth is tucked gracefully; pearls are fastened at both its ends.

Lotus eyes, graceful earrings at his ears, and a face that is the treasury of all beauty;

lovely brows, an enchanting nose, and a brow whose tilak is the abode of radiance.

A charming crown shines upon his head, woven with auspicious pearls and jewels.

A great central jewel is set within that crown, worshiped by the families of the city’s women.
