Translation of page 52

Such is his greatness, yet the Cosmic Person is greater still. All beings are one quarter of him; three quarters are immortal in heaven. ॥3॥

Three quarters of the Cosmic Person rose upward; one quarter came to be here again. From there he spread in every direction, into all that eats and all that does not eat. ॥4॥

From him Viraj was born, and from Viraj the Cosmic Person arose. Once born, he extended beyond the earth, behind it and before it. ॥5॥

From that sacrifice in which everything was offered, curds mixed with clarified butter were gathered. From it he formed the animals of the air, the forest, and the village. ॥6॥

From that all-offering sacrifice were born the Rig and Sama hymns; from it were born the metres, and from it the Yajur Veda. ॥7॥

From it horses were born, and all creatures with two rows of teeth; from it cattle were born, and from it goats and sheep. ॥8॥

Upon the sacred grass they consecrated as their offering the Cosmic Person who had been born at the beginning; with him the gods, the heavenly beings, and the sages performed the sacrifice. ॥9॥

When they divided the Cosmic Person, into how many portions did they arrange him? What became his mouth? What were his arms? What were his thighs and feet called? ॥10॥

The Brahmin was his mouth; the warrior was made his arms; the commoner was his thighs, and from his feet the servant was born. ॥11॥

The moon was born from his mind, and the sun was born from his eye; Indra and Agni arose from his mouth, and Vayu from his breath. ॥12॥

From his navel came the middle realm; from his head, heaven was formed; from his feet came the earth and from his ears the directions—thus they fashioned the worlds. ॥13॥
