“According to the Vedas, no one here was born from mother and father; in your household they all sprang from the earth—such is not our custom!”

At that moment Chandrakala, exceedingly clever and tender, Princess Siddhi’s younger sister and Lakshminidhi’s sister-in-law, says: “Darling Ragho, from childhood you lived among ascetics. Tell us honestly—where did you learn all these tricks and clever deceits? Did you learn them among the sages’ wives, or beside your own sister? Darling, without tasting something sweet and savory, how could you recognize its flavor?”

Simple-hearted Bharata says, “Friend, you too remain an unmarried girl; how can you, darling, speak of the company of men? We lived among sages to learn knowledge, and learned whatever they taught us. To learn the arts of love from women, we have now come into your presence.”

Siddhi answers, “Listen, darling—do not speak in this way. You are counted among holy men; what could you know of worldly affairs?”

Bharata says, “Darling, you speak the truth—we are indeed wandering sadhus. Woman, serve us in such a way that our hearts become pleased. Let the yogis fill their stomachs with the nectar of your lips; give that nectar as food and perform the worship due to guests.”

One companion says, “Listen, all of you—let us tell them one thing. We have learned that they once went to protect a sage’s sacrifice. There they saw the lovely Tataka; overcome by desire, she ran toward them. They could not tolerate her behavior, and killed her out of spite.”
