The exceedingly delicate princesses, led by Siddhi and filled with affection, begin lovingly directing playful wedding-taunts at Raghubara.
One companion says, “Listen, darling—where did you obtain such a form? We have heard that Kama is exceedingly handsome, but you surpass even him.”
Siddhi says, “Listen, Raghunandana: you are our sister’s husband. Darling, we shall ask you one thing; conceal nothing from us. Marriage alliances are generally made between people of the same rank and lineage; how, then, did you marry your own sister to Rishi Rishyashringa? Did he abduct her and run away, or did she willingly follow him? Tell us the honest truth, darling—you are the fortunate bridegroom.”
Lakshmana replies, “Listen, cherished girl: the Creator has fashioned the world in many ways. The making and settling of royal marriages lie within a king’s authority. We are princes, and the dispassionate King of Videha gave his word; by destiny’s course and my heart’s good fortune, my marriage took place in your house.”
Another companion says, pretending astonishment, “Why speak of all this? You are Siddhi, while Lakshminidhi is a woman— how can one woman marry another?”
Another says, “Listen, darling—who could possibly defeat you? The ways of your household are already famous throughout the world! The women of Ayodhya are noble, generous, and remarkably accomplished: they eat sacrificial kheer and produce sons without any husband’s work!”
Hearing the companion’s words, Raghunandana answers with a gentle smile: “Darling, conceal the ways of your own household before you speak of the affairs of others.
