Translation of page 153

Those who claimed that Maya, attachment, and passion never came near them even in dreams became caught in love’s net when they beheld his charming childhood play. His gentle speech sells without a price even the cleverest of sages. Ramasahaya says: only one who has gone there can know the marketplace of Ayodhya.

Pada 264

“Wondrous is your glance, O wanderer of Ayodhya! Your eyes are arrows and your brows their bow— I know no other weapon. You leave no mark upon the surface, yet wound the heart within; what an extraordinary hunter you are! Your eyes are filled with nectar, poison, and intoxication, their whites, dark pupils, and red corners mingled together. Baladeva says: whoever you look upon lives and dies, bends and suddenly falls.”

“Friend, the loving gestures of the two delight me! Arm joined to arm and neck to neck, they smile and speak together; the two moonlike faces gaze at one another and bring their lovely cheeks close. Their two crowns become entangled as they remain embraced, and their moon-bright faces appear reflected in one another. Siya Ali says: they are the very treasure of my life— again and again I offer myself to this beauty.”

These loving eyes will not be satisfied without beholding him. Whenever I see my dark beloved sporting in the bowers along the bank of the Sarayu, a crown upon his head, earrings at his ears, and dark curls clustering about his face—
