Teach me some spell of enchantment— I shall count it a great kindness. “Come, friend,” says Mohani Ali; “together we shall bring that beloved beneath our sway.”

Pada 243

There stands Ayodhya’s darling in Pramodavana! When I behold his extraordinary, swaying gait, my heart is utterly deceived and stolen. When he speaks, it is as though nectar rains down; with his glances he casts a spell upon the heart.

“From what bower have you come into this grove? Turn toward me and grant my body one smiling glance.” Mohani Ali says: seeing the beloved wandering there, tears of love stream from her eyes.

Pada 244

His astonishing sidelong glances have struck and wounded me. Friend, my heart remains restless; sleep no longer comes to my eyes. It has no patience, but aches day and night; nowhere does it find the least peace. Mohani Ali pleads: “Abandon your mercilessness— without you, not even a moment passes.”

Chaiti — Pada 245

Sita gazes into her bracelet, O Rama, and there beholds Raghubara’s reflection. Her hand can no longer remain steady; she is intoxicated, wholly immersed in love. All the companions gather and sing auspicious songs as she sits in King Janaka’s courtyard. Mohani Ali says: “Listen, dear friend— now the longing of marriage has arisen within her.”

Pada 246

The beauty of Ayodhya’s gallant captivates me, O Rama; curling locks hang about his face. I had gone with my friend into the pleasure-grove, where a cool arbor cast its shade. There in the grove my eyes met his— those dark, curling tresses! Seeing me, that beloved of Ayodhya came and placed his arms around my neck.
