Pada 234
“Friend, this gallant beloved of Ayodhya has come splendidly adorned! A crown of pearls shines upon his head; in a moment he bewitches every young woman’s heart. Who in all this world has not been captivated by him?
“Every graceful maiden of Mithila who once took pride in her beauty has lost that pride upon beholding the beloved’s loveliness. Smiling, he casts an enchanting spell, then looks upon them with a sidelong glance; along every road in this city he has wrought sweet havoc.”
Pada 235
How handsomely the bridegroom is adorned—a peacock crown shines upon his head! Kohl has been placed within his eyes, yellow garments clothe his body, his smile steals the heart, and a saffron mark adorns his brow. Mithila’s lovely women wander in confusion, intoxicated with love; drawn by the darling’s beauty, they run to see him wherever he goes. “Rama, Lord of Sita, is the very abode of enchanting beauty,” all the women say, and they worship Gana-Gauri.
Pada 236
Your colorful eyes strike my very heart when you smile. Wounded—yes, wounded—I wander wounded, pierced by the sword of your glance. Your pupils are dark, so dark, while their corners are deeply red. Nectar drips from your lips—nectar itself— O heart-bewitching beloved!
Pada 237
“Dark one, your smile wreaks devastation. Whoever beholds your red lips laughing instantly forgets all knowledge. Wounded, she falls to the ground; in a moment no life seems to remain in her body. Mohani Ali pleads: beloved of Videha’s daughter, lay aside this arrow!”
