Pada 227

Without seeing him, my eyes will not obey me.

Ever since they beheld the sweetness of that charming form, these rasika eyes have gone mad. Like bees drinking nectar from a joyful lotus, my mind has become intoxicated.

As the chakora gazes toward the moon, my eyes drink cup after cup of the nectar of his beauty. Ah, wise beloved Rama—without you, who could understand the silence of my heart?

Pada 228

My heart has been struck by the sweetness of my beloved’s smile.

Rama’s every limb is home to the beauty of ten million Cupids; yellow garments upon his cloud-dark body flash like lightning.

The tassel and crest quiver upon his head; the fish of my heart is caught in the net of his curls. This pain cannot be drawn out; it lies hidden in the gentle radiance of his nose-jewel.

His curling locks have stolen my heart.

Those lovely, arched tresses—dense, glossy, and black—fall gracefully across his cheeks. His sidelong lotus-eyes are like the dagger of Love; they have murdered my heart.

The sweetness of the smile upon his moon-face has cast Love’s enchantment and laid its snare upon me. Says Mauna Mudita: beholding the sweet glory of the Prince of Awadh, my eyes have filled to overflowing.

His every charming grace has entered and settled in my heart.

Upon his cloud-dark body the yellow garment shines like flashing lightning, tightly wrapped and fastened around his waist.

Like the chakora at dawn, turning from the fading moon, I am ensnared by the nectarous beauty of his own moon-face.

Seeing the loveliness of every limb,
