Everyone says that the world is an illusion. It doesn’t have any substance. Then, what is the truth? We come to Satsang in search of this. What is that Truth which is beyond birth and death? Saint Kabir Ji says that opportunities don’t come often. What opportunities? Opportunities to discover the Truth don't come again and again. He has also said, 'Oh mind, foolishly you have wasted this life.' So in trying to appease the mind, we will waste our lives. And this opportunity will not come often. This is a great clue. Time is important, and we have to quit catering to the mind, because it is a fool which will waste our lives.
But what happens is that we know only the mind. We don’t know much else other than the mind. Even when we see this world, we make judgements on it based on the mind: 'I like this, and I don’t like that.' We are caught in its clutches. But Kabir Ji tells us that we will waste this life like this. So what else is there apart from the mind? Who can tell us this truth which is beyond the mind? It is important to recognize that. And it is for that reason that we come to Satsang. By now we have a sense that the voice of the mind is not the voice of the Atma within. Otherwise, Kabir Ji would have never said, 'Oh mind, you foolishly wasted this life.' He would never call the Atma within foolish, nor say that we would waste our life catering to it.
If we have been told that the mind is foolish and that only the voice of the Atma within can tell us the truth, how many of us in this world have truly met this Atma and live their life based on its guidance? Very few. Mostly we are following the mind. So, to come to the Truth, we must first discover this inner Atma and follow only its guidance. This is the most important thing to do in the world. Everything else is pointless trouble over things which are bound to go. If not today, then tomorrow; and what will go tomorrow is already gone. So is there something which we never leave, nor does it leave us? Something that stays forever? What is that Truth? You go anywhere, to any Guruji, to any Satsang—their only job is to take you to this.
Not to just tell you about it, but to take you to it. We should listen to them because only they can tell you that the God, Atma, Ishwar, Brahman that you are looking for, they have already discovered—had Darshan of. That is why they can tell you how to find God. That is why we have their photos on the wall, because they have found God whom we all want. So it is important to listen to them. What is a Guru? A Guru is one who can show us because they have found God. That is why we venerate and respect them, because that which is the highest achievement of mankind—God Realization—they have achieved.
So that Guru actually is only an instrument, a means for what? For the Satguru which is within you. So their work is only to take you to the Satguru within. That is the work of the outer Guru. And their work is important because our habit is to be involved in the world with the mind, so much so that we can't hear the voice of the inner Satguru. That is why you need an external Guru, one with a form. So how many of us can say we have found God? How many can claim that we have not wasted, or are not currently wasting, this life? That which is beyond Maya is God. So what is that which neither the sense organs are showing you, nor the mind is telling you about? What else is there with you? That is God.

Instead of looking at this as just theory, let’s do it practically. There’s this room. This man is sitting. There’s a computer. What else? What else is there? There can be some emotion or feeling. There can be pain or pleasure in the body. All this can be there. What else? There can be thoughts in the mind. Now the mind can be very restless saying it has to give an answer. Don’t be worried over that. What is there apart from all these? Most people will say there is nothing else. Then I will tell you that there is a tool that everyone has tasted. That is love.
Not the kind of love involved in wanting something. It’s the love which is unconditional, which has no expectations. Similar to what we have towards our children or parents. This love is not a feeling. You may say that it is a feeling as it is something perceived, but it is not a feeling because even when you feel anger towards your children, even then, if somebody were to ask you if you truly love your children, you will say yes. How do you know this? So this unconditional love, how do we experience it? Without having to perceive or think anything, right? We know that. So if we go to the source of this love, who is there? This unconditional love we may think is towards our parents and children, but actually this unconditional love comes only from God and is for God. So this is a very simple technique by which we can reach God.
When you come to Satsang and the mind is calm, then you will begin to experience this love. Although it is not inside the body, it may appear that way. For now, that is okay. So that love, where does it come from? Who is behind it? I often say to use that unconditional love as a perfume to lead you to God. This fragrance of love, you have to find what is its source; you have to follow it. How can we do that? Not with the sense organs, nor with the mind; we just have to stay with it. That itself will take you deeper and tell you. When we go to the source of this love, then it will become apparent that there is an Atma here. This Atma is not a human. It is not a man or woman. It does not want anything. It does not reject anything. To discover this Atma is most important. It is most important to have Darshan of this Atma because this Atma is an aspect of God.
You may find someone who you think might be your best friend, but if you do not stay with them, what is the benefit? You just want to meet... we should stay with them, no? Similarly, it is not enough to just meet God. We need to become one with Him. We need to merge with Him. This path of God is said to be very narrow. Two people cannot fit into this path. On this path, there can either be God, or me. But there is no place for two. There are very few people in the world who will reach this point of leaving the ‘me’ and coming to God. Most people come to the point that there is nothing to gain with this ‘me’ and that I only want the Truth or God. But without this, staying with God is impossible.
For this, it is necessary to turn our trust away from our understanding and towards God. Because if God was something we could understand, I would have given you a book. I would have said, 'It is written in this book, understand it.' I would have given it to everyone. Why is it that we think that it is very rare for someone to find God? Because it is necessary to turn our trust away from our understanding and towards God. A very few can and want to do this. God cannot be understood. That which is subtler than understanding, there you will find Him. To put it simply: not in understanding, but in your Heart you will find Him. So, the advantage of having a Guru is that we are able to leave our understanding and to tread the path he is pointing to. How many of us can say we have found God?
