You Will Find It Impossible to Suffer

By discovering the aware presence that witnesses all experience, suffering becomes impossible because you recognize yourself as the limitless space in which everything arises and passes.

What should happen when you find your Self? That is in a way what the question is. What should happen? One thing I’ve already said, that you will find it impossible to suffer. You will find it very difficult suffer, to suffer, to pick up the false identity. Just like if you were confused about something, or in fact, you were clear about something but you were wrong and then somebody tells you, “But this is not how it is”. Initially you may resist. You may say, “No, no what are you saying? I know this for sure”. Then they provide more evidence, more evidence, more evidence. Then you look also, “Yeah”. Then the certainty becomes uncertainty, then you're really checking. When you are uncertain, then you are really checking. By the time you're certain, you're still like trying to prove, you are right. When you become uncertain you really just open and looking and then once you see that, “Ah, in reality it is this”. Then because you’ve really checked, you’ve really looked and you went through all your doubts, then when somebody comes and tells you what you were certain about earlier, (you will say) “That is just not true”. So, to believe yourself to be limited again will be very very difficult and even if you accomplish it, it will be very very momentary, that will be very very short lived, very brief and will become shorter and shorter and shorter. If somebody comes now to announce, that you are just the body. Something has already seen much beyond that and you will not really buy into that story. Although you may have completely believed it a few years ago. Like if this One (pointing to himself) had a conversion with the One that was here 20 years ago and said, “Hey kid, you are beyond time and space, you are beyond all phenomenal things, all this life and death has nothing to do with your Reality”. The younger boy would have said, “That sound like pure nonsense”. Because that One hadn’t looked and just believed. Now this One has looked and looked beyond looking and seen that it is just not true that I am just an object in this tiny world of perception. If I'm just an object within my perception then wow, what about the rest of it? What is that? If you are just an object in your perception, who's the one looking? Whose perception is it? And who's aware of this perception? And how is it that the object keeps changing but that which is aware of this perception of the changing object never changes. That’s why even if we include everything in the world, but the minute we start to include that which is witnessing the world, our delusion of ‘containment within the world’ starts to disappear.

Key Teachings

  • Suffering arises from identification with the mind and body, not from existence itself
  • True freedom is found not by changing circumstances but by recognizing the aware space in which all experience appears
  • When you clearly see the nature of your own awareness, the possibility of suffering dissolves naturally
