You Know Your Self
The true Self requires no effort to know—it is already present as the knowing presence itself, recognized when the mind rests in pure awareness.
So the only ignorance is ‘The Self taking itself to be the not-Self’. And who is that Self? Who is that Self? You are. So, what [do] you take yourself to be? Is the fundamental no, is the fundamental question. What are you taking yourself to be now? [Silence] Now, the thing is that I want to add something to this, which is that even if you are taking yourself to be ‘I am the Self, I am the Self, the Self’ then that is also limited. ‘I am the Atman, I am Brahman’ then it becomes the question of belief or conviction but it is not about that. What is your intuitive knowledge and what have we said intuitive knowledge is? That which you know but you don’t have to think and you don’t have to perceive. Do you have something like that or it is just a mythical construct? Is there something that you know that you don’t have to think or perceive? Go for that, if you are going for anything at all. What is that which you know, that needs no concept and no seeing of any sort? Something like that you know? No? Do we know something like that or no? [Smiles] Yes? So this comes back to my favorite ‘What do you know when you know nothing’? This is what is being conveyed in that. So this Self-knowledge, this intuitive experience as the Masters called it, is also said that it is universal. So when I ask this question I have no doubt about it. [Smile] I have no doubt about the fact that ‘You know your Self’. It’s only what you take yourself to be which gets in the way.
