The Quality-Less ‘Ananda’

True bliss is not a quality to be attained but the essential nature of Awareness itself, beyond all conditions and attributes.

One is this Ananda which is available in the world, if you eat a very nice Sondesh (a sweet from Calcutta) which is very famous [sweet] called Sondesh. So you eat that and just like ‘Ahh, beautiful, what a taste.’ Or you hear some beautiful music you know M.S. Subhalakshmi singing Bhaja Govindam or for that matter Post Malone playing Sunflower it does not matter, based on your taste. So you can have this kind of worldly Ananda in these things. This is the first type of Ananda. Second (like we were talking earlier) just in your own Presence when your attention is fixated on this sense of Being itself there is a perfume of Presence which is a beautiful Ananda, a beautiful Ananda. Sometimes some divine music also gets you also there to this divine Ananda like this kind of thing. Or you see a beautiful mountain or a valley, something beautiful. You see a sunset and you experience the Ananda which is the Ananda of your own Presence. That is the second type of Ananda. Then the third type of Ananda is this which we are talking about which is Brahmananda. The Ananda which is Brahman itself Is. It is not something which you get. Like the ‘Self-knowledge’ that it is. It is not something that it has. In the same way, the Ananda that you yourself are, not a position that you will have, not a perception that you will find. It is your very nature is Ananda. You are It. This Brahmananda. But to the mind, this type of Ananda is very confusing because, like [the mind’s voice says] ‘What is it’? Is it sweet, sweet? No, it not sweet, sweet. Is it nice and spicy? No, it's not nice and spicy. Does it smell really nice, is it roses all the time? No, it is not roses all the time. It’s none of these. Is it like sweet music, you hear this primordial vibration, Om? Is it that? No, it is not even that. It is beyond that. Then what is the Ananda in it? For the mind, it’s just like… [frustrated tone] because this is the ways it [the mind] can experience Ananda. Then it seems like it is pointless. But this… so can’t really be spoken. Beyond even what we call love, beyond peace, beyond what we call joy. That is the inherent beauty of your own Self. Quality-less, tasteless, innocent, beyond innocence - so that Ananda.

Key Teachings

  • True Ananda (bliss) is beyond all qualities and conditions—it is the inherent nature of pure Awareness itself
  • Happiness that depends on qualities (objects, experiences, circumstances) is limited and temporary, while quality-less Ananda is the unchanging background of all experience
  • The Self is already complete and full; no addition of any quality can enhance what already is
